Thick Film Superconducting Wires and Tapes

Task Leader:Professor Pen Chu Chou at Penchou@space.svecuh.edu

The development of high Tc superconductors has recently focused on wire and tape fabrication. The deposition of thick YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) films on flexible substrates promises wires with high critical current densities approaching 1 MA/cm2 and high field stability. Thick, high quality YBCO films have been deposited by photo-assisted MOCVD at rates approaching 1 mm/min. Such films have been integrated with atomically ordered roll-textured nickel substrate foils using both CeO2 and YSZ buffer layers. This has resulted in stable high performance YBCO-base superconducting wire to be applied in such areas as transformers, transmission wires, high field magnets and motors and generators.
